At a glance accessibility
This ride is a dark ride and you cannot see the queuing areas from the outside:
- There is a standard standby queue, a single rider queue, a premier access queue and a queue for those with orange and blue passes.
- There is signage for the queue entrances except for the one for orange and blue priority pass holders, who use the exit. This is to the right of the main queue entrance.
- The main queue has some really cute theming including Oakens Sauna!
- The premier access queue is step free.
- The wheelchair access queue is a series of quite long corridors, all on an uphill incline, with a faux stone floor.
- The queues are all quite dark. The ride loading area can be busy with people entering from different directions, this is managed by cast members but there can also be a few mobility devices stored here while people are on the ride making the area a tighter space to move around in.
Queue experience
Boarding the ride
This ride fully stops and unloads before boarding, so it is stationary when you board.
Step 1: Entering the boarding area - Cast members will direct you to where to wait to board. Each row of the boat has a lane with a gate that is closed until boarding time. For everyone except wheelchair users taking their chair up to the boat you will be directed to the row for where you will be seated on the boat, for wheelchair users there is a wider lane used.
Step 2: Transfer process - once the boat is ready to board the gates for each row will open and you walk up to the boat and step down into the boat, boarding in the order you were waiting in your row. For wheelchair users using the transfer assistance device the cast member will put it in place and you will be the first on your row to board. You move your wheelchair up next to the device to allow a side transfer onto the top step, then continue to transfer down each step and onto the boat, then slide across to the far seat. The transfer aid is removed so the rest of your party can then board.
Step 3: Seating position - the boat features bench seats which are low and not very deep, so the seat itself is not very supportive, bet there is no separation between the seats so a companion next to you could be leant on or aid in supporting. Once everyone is seated a lap bar is pulled down across the whole row.
Ride experience from an accessibility perspective
This ride is a water boat ride that does include drops, including one backwards drop, and also includes smoke. As you can't see the ride from outside I would recommend watching a ride video on youtube in advance if unsure.
- Restraints - there is a single lap bar for the whole row
- While the ride moves quite slowly it does include two drops, the first is backwards and the boat continues to move backwards after the drop, entering an area filled with smoke, before turning forwards again for the second slightly longer drop.
- The ride is in the dark, with enough lighting to see the scenes. Some areas use a lot of fairy style lights, and Disney warn that strobe lights are used.
- Songs from frozen are used throughout the ride, these are at an as expected volume with no sudden changes.
- Audio description of the ride is available.
- There is a splash risk, sometimes you may not get wet at all, other times you may end up in a puddle.
- There is an area near where you load the ride for storage of wheelchairs and other aids. If you are able to walk from this area to the boat you can park them here and then go to the boat (approximately 10-20m)
- If you need to you can take your chair right up to the ride then a companion or cast member can move it to the storage area, it can then be returned at the end of the ride
Wheelchair and mobility aid storage
- For most guests, including those with a green priority pass, you exit from the opposite side to where you board the boat, and the standard exit includes stairs and exits into the shop
- For those who can't manage stairs there is an alternate route that is step free, remind a cast member if you need this route when boarding
- For those who use aids and have left them in the storage area you will exit the same way you boarded. Your companion or a cast member can bring them to you if needed
- If you used the transfer aid to board this will be brought back to allow you to use it to disembark
- You will then exit the ride using the same route you used to enter.
Exiting the ride
I have always loved boat rides and enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean, though some of us are not as keen. Pirates however has always been a really difficult transfer for me, but the transfer aid for this ride worked really well and made it a far easier and more dignified experience. Saying that it does still require good upper body and core strength and for those that hate drops no matter how easy the transfer it still won't be a favourite ride.
Our real life experiences
- If you are unsure about how you or someone in your party will find the drops, and effect, watch a ride video first on youtube
- Check with a cast member when approaching the ride which queue to use, especially if you have a purple pass as this seems to sometimes vary
- Confirm with a cast member when boarding if you can't manage stairs to exit
- Enjoy the ride!
